Erik's Weekly Fitness Tip | Hungover?

How Ya Feelin' Today?!

So you had a little too much to drink this weekend. Guess what - so did the rest of America celebrating the 4th of July.  Beer, mixed drinks, BBQ, too much sun, and not enough sleep…is the perfect cocktail to feel downright awful this morning.  We’ve all been there, but that’s not helping your aching head right now.  Here are some quick ways to get back on you’re A game.

Water

Alcohol is a diuretic that will cause you to be dehydrated.  This is the first and best place to start.  Start pounding the H2O to rehydrate your body.  This alone should help you start feeling better.

Sport Drinks

Alcohol and sun can contribute to dehydration and loss of electrolytes.  Water works great, but if you prefer some that tastes better, a sport drink is a good alternative.

Coffee

My personal favorite!  Head to your local coffee shop and get a cup of joe to feel more awake and alert.  Caffeine can also help with that bad headache you have.  Again, be sure to drink water because caffeine can cause dehydration.

Workout

Sweat it out!  Sometimes the best thing you can do to get over your hangover is to get your body moving.  Head out on a run, lift weights, or even a walk can help the hangover blues.  Getting the blood moving and a little kick from the endorphins can be all it takes.

Sick out

When in doubt, turn off the alarm and sick out of work the next day.  Everyone has been there. Just don’t tell your boss I recommended this one!

Erik's Weekly Fitness Tip | Dear Diary

How many of you keep a training journal?

Logging your daily workouts is not a new concept by any means, but it does have huge value.

There are so many things that you can see when you keep track of your workouts:

  • progression
  • victories
  • failures
  • health
  • poor planning

These are just a few little secrets that your training log will reveal.

Why is it so important to keep track of your workouts?

It gives you a chance to plan better for the next big event.  Now you can avoid some of the potholes that you crashed into last time.

Be diligent!  Keep track of everything:

  • food
  • sleep
  • overall stress
  • warm-ups
  • speeds
  • loads
  • rest periods
  • how you felt during the workout
  • how you recovered from the workout

You'll be happy you did!

Yes, it can be a pain to start this process. But once you get into the habit of it, you will be grateful that you did. This information matters - it will allow you to take some of the guesswork out of how to hit your next target.

Erik's Weekly Fitness Tip | Bring Out The Best In You

Redondo Beach Triathlon

Two weeks ago I got to watch our local triathlon race go right by the house.  I stood to the side as the competitors waited for the starter to fire the gun.  You could sense the excitement among the triathletes and the spectators.  The gun shot and the field was in a full sprint into the ocean. The next time I would see the lead group they would be flying by my house on their bikes.

For The Love Of Competition

You have to love competition! Summer is here, now is your chance to compete.  It doesn’t matter what or how well you do.  Competition will bring out the best in you.  It’s also okay to be nervous and a little fearful; this is all part of the experience.

The daily workouts can become boring and you might not always give a 100% because there really isn’t anything there for you to push your limits.  Competing will fix that problem.

What Will You Do?

Now is your chance, find that “thing” that you want to try and go after it!
