Erik's Weekly Fitness Tip | Performance & Staying Motivated

A Show Of Hands

Do you ever find yourself bored with your exercise routine, not wanting to go to the gym, or experiencing a complete loss of motivation?  Sure, you have, we all have.  It’s how life works - there will always be ups and downs.  If you are finding yourself more on the down side you need to find a performance goal to go after.  It can be an actual event or a solo performance just for you to know of.

Get Back On Track

The goal is to set a target that is hard enough that you must put daily work into reaching it, but can’t be something totally out of reach.  Performance goals help you show up to the gym when that’s the last thing you want to do.  Performance goals will make you accountable!

These types of goals require a plan; a plan helps you stay on track with proper training, rather than showing up to the gym not having a clue what you are going to do besides making it there.  Performance goals should excite you and give you that feeling of butterflies in your stomach when you think about that big day that is coming up!

It’s these types of workouts that will put your training, sleep, and nutrition right back on track.  Last but certainly not least these types of goals should get you out of your comfort zone, both physically and mentally.

Go get ‘em!

Erik's Weekly Fitness Tip | Don't Fail After January 1

I Resolve To...

It has been my experience that most people go wrong on January 1st with their fitness goals.  Eating better, exercising more and losing weight are some of the most popular New Year resolutions.

January 1st comes and people attack their goals with great gusto, but many have no idea how to reach their goals and maintain momentum and motivation.

Bobby Fischer It

Strategy is everything, ask any football coach, war general or chess master.  There has to be a plan in place to allow the best possible chance to succeed.

The best advice I can give you if you are going to make changes that last this New Year -

Make the plan simple and progressive!

Complex can come later after you have exhausted simple and progressive.

Talk to others who have accomplished the goal you are chasing down.  Find out what worked for them and what didn’t. This can be valuable knowledge that saves you from going down the wrong path.

Last, but certainly not least, be patient. Keep in mind that changes take time.

Key Points To Remember

  • Simple and progressive
  • Find out how others did it
  • Be patient

Erik's Weekly Fitness Tip | Winter Goals

Now Is The Time

Wintertime is coming and now is the time to take advantage of it.  Most people hunker down and go into survival mode, the days are short on light, temperatures drop, and motivation usually falls off. Being from the midwest I totally understand.

Set An Attainable Goal

But this is your chance, an opportunity to make some real gains with your strength and overall health.  It is time to set a goal that you can reach in the next 3 months, a goal that will not come without busting your butt to get it.

What Sets You Apart

When most people are in their warm houses sipping coffee in the morning, you are out running your morning loop.  When most people head home after work because it is dark and they're tired, you head to the gym to get your squats and deadlifts in.  And finally when you are at one of your seemingly endless line of holiday parties, you limit your cookie and booze intake when all the other people are complaining about the extra weight they’ve put on, yet continue to eat and drink.   Get after it!
